British Values and Protected Characteristics

In line with the Department for Education’s five-part definition we promote the following British values at Bulford St Leonard’s Church of England Primary School:

  •  Democracy

  • The rule of law

  • Individual liberty

  • Mutual respect

  • Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

These values are embedded throughout our curriculum, our daily Worship and our whole school life.

We live these values as part of our everyday life at BSL – we have rules to keep us safe and learning, we choose our Collective Worship Team, Team Captains and our SLT (Student Leadership Team), we respect each other’s views and beliefs and treat everyone equally and kindly as part of Team Bulford.

We use the Jigsaw PSHE scheme which helps promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. Jigsaw contributes, as a good PSHE programme should, to the British Values agenda very significantly, both through the direct teaching of information and through the experiential learning children will enjoy.

The 5 strands of the British Values agenda have been mapped across every Puzzle and every Piece (lesson) which you can see below.

To support curriculum delivery the school also utilises the Picture News weekly resources which we share in a whole class Worship once a week. These expose the children to current news stories with an inspirational image and thought provoking questions. This helps the children of BSL to gain a deeper understanding of the wider world and current events that are happening, in a manner in which they understand and may otherwise have not been made aware of.

We find that using such engaging and inspiring resources ignites a passion in our children to learn more about key issues for their generation while also promoting British Values.

As well as the British Values, and our own Bulford Values, we are committed to Equalities Education. We work to ensure that all our children understand that:

- Everyone is included - we show respect, love and tolerance to all

-Everyone is special and unique

- We celebrate our differences

- We are all equal in our differences

The Equality Act became law in 2010. It covers everyone in Britain and protects people from discrimination, harassment and victimisation. The Equality Act protects people against discrimination because of the protected characteristics we all have. Under the Act, there are nine protected characteristics:

- Age

-Disability

- Gender reassignment

- Race

-Religion or belief

- Marriage or civil partnership

- Sex

- Sexual orientation

-Pregnancy and maternity

At Bulford St Leonard's we teach and promote these characteristics in our curriculum and, combined with our strong Christian ethos, children at Bulford learn, understand and show love, tolerance and acceptance to all.
