The Year 1 pupils walk was linked to the geography topic they have been studying in class.
“The objective was to use simple fieldwork and observational skills to study the physical features of the surrounding environment of our school,” said class teacher, Caroline Nash. “We took a local route map in order to use simple compass directions and locational and directional language, to describe the location of features on the route.”
The school children also took a data sheet to record key human features specific to a village location, including a farm, houses, thatched cottages, church, public house and a shop.
“It is really important to engage young minds in the physical world around them before the virtual worlds they are subjected to take over. Just as travel broadens the mind, an expedition of this type has highly positive impacts on learning,” said Principal, Sarah Ward.
